From polar research to pure calm

From polar research to pure calm
Svalbart was built as a research vessel for the North Pole, and she has the scars to prove it. Outside she remains every inch a ship, with a white hull, the flag at her stern and a mast rising above the deck. The brief was not to erase that history but to give her a second life as a home, quiet enough to rest in and honest enough to remember where she has been.
A white retreat in the hold
Inside, the hold has become a calm white retreat with concrete floors and round portholes. A section of the original deck plating is left exposed overhead, a deliberate tribute to her expedition past that you see every time you look up. Everything else steps back, so the light and the proportions of the ship can do the work.
Oak, made to measure
Bespoke oak runs through the furniture and ties the rooms together: a built-in bench, floating shelves and a bed on an oak base beneath a square skylight, so you fall asleep looking at the sky. Each piece was drawn for its exact place in the hull and built in our own workshop.
